GUIDED TOUR – PALEOCHRISTIAN BASILICA OF VEGA DEL MAR
Paleochristian Basilica of Vega Del Mar is a set consisting of a double apse basilica building and a necropolis. Its baptismal font, arranged for immersion baptism, is prominent.
With a potential age of over 1,500 years, it is one of the most brilliant archeological manifestations of early Christianity. The set consists of a basilica and an associated necropolis. It is a square-plan building, slightly oriented in a northwest-southeast direction.
The temple consists of a central body with three naves separated by pillars, with the most dominant feature being the existence of two opposing apses, which would serve as altar and martyrium. This feature makes it unique as there are very few parallels in the Iberian Peninsula. Next to the western apse is the baptistery which houses several baptismal fonts, with one that combines the Greek cross and the fish shape arranged for immersion baptism standing out.
In the same place is an extensive inhumation necropolis, from which around 200 burials have been excavated. According to recent work, these tombs are located in a relatively wide chronological range, from the 3rd to the 7th century AD, and respond to a typology that is both varied and archetypical.
VISITING: Free entrance without appointment.
GUIDED TOUR SCHEDULE: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 11:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
